Photography Blog

I'm just starting out in photography and here are my thoughts so far...

1/3/2010 >> As of today i'm officially camera-less, having sold my trusty 400d that i've had since September '07. Thankfully in the mail should be a 7d body, the idea being that i'll be able to improve further with the new features it offers but not go crazy with the full frame 5d Mk II.
Northern lights - Norway - 15th Feb 20109/2/2010 >> Some great photo ops in Norway, including the Aurora Borealis aboard ship, Husky sledging, Spending a night in a Snow Hotel, oh and i got engaged too !

26/8/2009 >> Wow, it's been a while - weather not really condusive to going out and taking photos, 3 weeks of the best weather spent being an film extra. But I have recently purchased the 430 EX II flash, so will post some shots as soon as i get some.

I'm trying to read up as much as i can about fill in flash techniques. Canon USA

18/11/2008 >> iStock sold photo found in use at A2BWales.com (Carew Castle at the bottom of the page)
Beach Harness racing practice6/9/2008 >> Took a walk down to the beach to get some photos of the sunset and was lucky enough to snap this shot. It's also my first shot on flickr to make it to Explore! Very little done to the image; a slight horizon tweak and removed some distracting seagulls in the distance. I've also submitted it to iStock, so hopefully it will be approved (feel free to purchase it, if it does get accepted) Buy now !

4/9/2008 >> It's been a while but i have been playing around with Adobe Lighroom 2, it's very powerfull and has meant i've now started shooting in RAW+L. In the past i've never wanted to alter my images but with Lightroom it makes it very easy and enhancements can be very subtle.... as well as completely alter your image from the original.

The Blue Golfer flower - experiment B&W + Tyre In these examples, i've used a de-saturate graduate filter and a dodge to bring back the colour into the subject.

and this adobe site for some more videos on all their products.

16/6/2008 >> Another new lens on it's way. As you may see from my Flickr shots, the majority of my shots are landscapes and I wanted a replacement for my kits lens.  I didn't really have anything specific in mind, i do like the IS on my 55-250 but after mulling it over for weeks, i went with the 17-40 L USM F4. I mostly shoot in good light so couldn't justify an F2.8 or going for the EF-S 17-55 IS USM. As i'm on a crop body, here's the link to a video review from cameralabs.com.
7/6/2008 >> Wedding photography.... Is not to be recommended.
Broad Haven Cliff Sunset Broad Haven SunsetMay Day >> Experimenting with camera settings on the beach. The right hand picture uses the flash to try and pick up some of the gorse, shooting into the sun is a challenge.

12/4/2008 >> Put together a couple of photos and was quite pleased with the effect.

Manorbier Church1/3/08 >> Attempts at HDR & Tonemapping using Photomatix software. Taken at Manorbier in Pembrokeshire.
blue tit 01blue tit 0311/2/08 >> A weekend of sun allowed me to snap a few shots at 250mm. My best results were using the Sport mode as our blue tits are very skitish normally flying off after one click of the fairly noisy 400d.

Example spots on sensorRed Dot Update : Canon support said to ship it off to the service department, however i found this link and will test the manual Sensor Clean Function before doing so - as i suspect that is all they will do ?...   Well it worked anyway, the red dots have gone from long exposures - why the Canon support didn't get me to do this i don't know. Is it a long term fix though ?

Great Tit 15-2-08 >> I'm still waiting for some sunny weather, however left is another example using the 55-250 lens and in the meantime I have experimented taking some long exposures of stars which highlighted a suspected fault on my CCD, as i have two red pixels when viewing on PC. Need to do some more tests before calling the service dept.

Apparently taking a photo with the lens cap on, using manual focus should confirm.

Moon21/1/08 >> First moon shot with the new lens. For tips on taking moon shots, see this link : "How to take pictures of the moon" at Digital SLR Tips and Tricks.
19/1/08 >> My new lens has arrived ! Although the weather has meant i've not gone out with my camera for a few weeks now :¬(   One note on 7DayShop.com - Can't fault the price, however I can fault the customer services, despite having the lens on pre-order the card payment didn't go through (which doesn't show up in order history) and it took several emails before it was all sorted. Here's hoping for some nice weather soon !

28-11-07 >> I bought my first DSLR in August 07 a Canon 400D and have just invested in my first telephoto zoom lens. I opted for the Canon 55-250 f4-5.6 IS which is released in November and is currently on order pending release from 7DayShop.com for £177 inc P&P.

7DayShop.com itself does have mixed reviews though, so i'm keeping my fingers crossed.

It is a cheap and cheerful lens and others that I (and you) might consider include the 70-300 IS USM or the 50-200 L f4. For both these lenses however you can add on another £200.

I'll be sure to post some sample photos on flickr as soon as it arrives !
